Wednesday 21st February 2007 Clutha Vaults Open Mic Night

Wednesday 21st February 2007
Clutha Vaults Open Mic night, run by Sandy Watson.

I arrived a little late again this evening and Sandy had already started off the evening and was just finishing his songs. First up was Steven McCafferty who gave us his version of ‘Wake up Little Suzie’.

The next person is a Clutha Vaults newcomer, Allan who played mandolin and gave us ‘I think I’ve left’.

After Alan came Frank with ‘Goodbye My Old Friend.

Sandy then got back up and gave his very nice version of the classic Beatles song ‘Strawberry Fields’, with which everybody joined in and sang along.

Bob Leslie was then up for his first song of the evening, and he sang one of his own ballads called ‘Harmonise’. Elspeth Durkin then got up and sang ‘Autumn Leaves’ with Bob accompanying on the guitar.

Sandy then got Catriona up, and she gave us ‘Not a second time’ .

Next up was Scott, who gave us an excellent blues/jazz instrumental.
Jer McDade then gave us his composition ‘One day life got serious’.
Steven McCafferty gave us a WHO song next ‘Behind Blue Eyes’ followed by Allan with ‘May you never…’

The grandfather of the Clutha Vaults, Joe Mac then got up and gave us ‘Ride On’
Sandy got back on stage then and gave us his version of the Steve Earle song ‘Copperhead Road’

Bob was back up with another of his own songs ‘Cordelia/Jane’.

Gavin Watt then gave us ‘Factory girl’,
followed by Ian Adie with ‘Aurora Borealis’ and Frank once again.
Elspeth and Bob then gave a rendition of the Eagles song ‘Lyin’ Eyes’, and Bob stayed up to accompany Izzy on ‘Alexander’s Ragtime Band’.

Jer McDade was back up with ‘A beer for the Modern World’, followed by Gavin with ‘Yer own personal Jesus’.
We then had a ‘surprise’ guest on stage.

George Borowski was in town for a gig on the 22nd in Box [Sauchiehall Street] and had come to the pub with some old friends. Sandy introduced him as the original inspiration for the line in the Dire Streets song Sultans of Swing where it goes “ check out Guita George, he knows all the chords” , and as having worked with a huge variety of well known bands including Teenage Fan Club. He got up to perform and wowed everybody with his undoubted skill and enthusiasm . He did three songs including ‘to say Goodnight’ and ‘Don’t dance with him’ and got a standing ovation for several minutes.

Joe Kidd then finished the evening with ‘Down the Line’ and Good Day’.
