Clutha Vaults Open Mic - Wednesday 18th April 2007

Sandy had to borrow Bob Leslie's Guitar this evening, as his Gibson Hummingbird was at Jimmy Moon the luthiers, getting the neck repaired! He looks good even with a tambourine though!!

He started the evening with a couple of quiet ballads including the beutiful 'Ebb and Flow' before getting Bob Leslie up to perform his composition 'It wasn't down in Texas'.

After Bob, Sandy got Elspeth Durkin up to sing 'Autumn Leaves' with Bob,
and then next up was Cally who gave us a gentle version of the Rolling Stone hit 'Honky Tonk Angels.'

Then Gavin blew in and sang about 'Four Strong Winds',

after which Sandy persuaded Big Ron Simpson,

our champion weightlifter, to get up and sing 'The Green Fields of France' about the men who died in the battles of the First World War.
This is always sentimental for me as one of my Great Aunts had a fiance who was killed in 'The Great War' and she never married, but always kept his photograph in her house.

Written on the back is the message
'Say not "goodnight" but in
some brighter clime
Bid me "Good Morning" written 1st May 1917

ANYWAY, after big Ron came John who sang'What's a poor boygonna do?'

He was followed by George who gave us the Tennessee Ernie Williams song '16 tons'

Sandy got back up then and played 'Don't think twice'

then got Cally back up, when she gave us 'the Sally Gardens'

After Cally came Arthur singing a John Pride song -'Make me and Angel'. He was followed by his pal Stevie who accompanied by Bob Leslie, sang a blues song 'Headlights at my window'
Bob then gave us a spirited version [as always with Bob] of 'Who do you Love?' He was followed by newcomer Laura, who gave us an Elvis Presley medley which included bits of 'Blue Moon Kentucky' and 'Hound Dog'
After Laura,Gavin was back up with 'Here comes your Man' by the Pixies, followed by John with a steve earle song 'Poor Boy'

Then the grandaddy of the Clutha Joe Macatamy got up and gave us his renditions of 'Haul Away' and then 'Ride On'
Stevie got back up then and gave us a second version of 'The Green Fields of France' in a different style to big Ron.
Sandy then got Elspeth and Bob up and they sang scottish song 'The Wild Mountain Thyme' with some audience participation.
After them George got back up with a more modern scots song 'The Cod Liver Oil and the Orange Juice'
Jer McDade was next with a couple of his own compositions
[ you could say right-up-to-date scottish songs] 'Everything's going to be alright' and 'Victoria'

Ian Adie then performed his version of 'Stand by me' before allowing Stuart Workman ,
all the way from Edinburgh, to give us 'I lied' by Randy Newman and then 'Harvest Moon'.
Final act of the night was Joe Kidd who began with 'Red, Red wine' and finished the evening with his own song 'Good Day' [ or as the regulars sometimes refer to it - the ebay song!!
Another enjoyable evening showing off just a small amount of the talent in this country.

Victoria Bar Open Mic Night 9th April 2007

Easter Monday!
The bar was quite busy when I arrived, almost all of the people there for the Open Mic night. Big Bob Leslie the host was up on stage doing a few introductory numbers including the Little Feat number 'Willin.' and a new song of his own.

He then got Elspeth Durkin up to do some harmonies with him on another Little Feat song 'Dixie Chicken'. First guest singer was Jerry McCue, an excellent guitarist, who gave us 'Drift Away' and 'The land under their feet'.

As most people were still enjoying their first drinks Bob got up to play again and he sang the Tom Paxton song 'Beg, steal or borrow'.

He was then requested to perform a spanish number for some spanish visitors in the bar, so he gave them 'Fragilidad' [Fragile].

Marlene then got up with Michael and they gave us 'Black is the colour' and then Michael gave us 'Duncan'.

Jer McDade was next with a couple of his own popular compositions, 'Modern World' and 'Bob Treetop'. Elspeth Durkin was next - accompanied by Bob, and gave us 'Autumn Leaves' [one of Bob's favourites!] and then the Hank Williams classic 'Cheatin heart'. Bob then performed another request - 'Hello Marylou'.

He was followed by Annie, with Jerry McCue, giving us the tale of 'Ramona'. Jerry then gave us 'A Russian Lullaby'.

Joe Macatamy had arrived a little earlier and he got up and sang 'Up the Northern Water'. Bob then got up to do another request of ' Love the one you're with' followed by his own love song 'It wasn't down in Texas'.

John then got up from the audience and sang a Leonard Cohen number 'Halleluia'. Jer McDade then got up for a second time and gave us 'One day life got serious'

followed by 'Sing Song'. Then Michael and Marlene did the Dolly Parton Classic 'Jolene' -

with many of the audience joining in with the chorus. Michael then performed 'Hey Mr Dreamseller'. Elspeth then got up with Michael to perform the Neil Young song 'After the Goldrush' but Michael had forgotten a lot of the words and was 'improvising, which threw Elspeth's harmonising right out! but they still had a laugh at the end!

[Michael did say he had probably drunk too much by then!'] Jerry, Annie and Marlene then got up and performed 'Will the circle be unbroken' and were joined by many members of the audience for a 'singalong'.

After that Jerry stayed on stage and performed the Glasgow adaptaion of the Simon and Garfunkel song Sound of Silence and gave us 'The Sound of Sirens' about the hazards of drinking Buckfast!

Ian Adie had arrived by this time to see how well the evening was going and got up, with Bob on guitar to perform 'Go Bonnie Scotland'. Bob then did another request 'Handbags and Gladrags' before Joe Mac got up and did his second song 'Ride On'. Bob finished off the evening - accompanied by 'The Chicken Supremes' [ie members of the audience] with the footstomping 'Take another piece of my Heart'.

An enjoyable evening, and we wish Bob every success for the future, in the Stockwell Triangle!
